How This Green Lemonade Recipe Helps Your Body Transition To Spring

Nutrition

Spring always makes everyone in my family crave lemonade! Of course the bright sunshine, time outside, and afternoon hunger is one reason we are all craving a refreshment, but it is also exactly what our body wants this time of year. As you transition from winter, your blood and energy levels are adjusting. You can support an internal “spring cleaning” by feeding yourself purifying foods. This recipe is perfect for springing into the season with refreshed vigor!

How does this recipe renew your system?

Kale

This leafy green vegetable is a nutritional powerhouse that provides incredible healing and rejuvenation to the body! Kale is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, chlorophyll, amino acids, vitamins A, C, E, K, B-complex and minerals such as iron, magnesium, copper, and potassium. Due to its phytochemical and fiber content, kale will gently detox your body while also nourishing it on a cellular level. Kale has potent antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that support the immune system in functioning at an optimal level. The antioxidant content in this dark leafy green is out the roof – making it a great food to help protect the body from oxidative stress and cancer, as well as a food to fight aging in the hair, skin, and nails. Kale contains certain compounds that gently stimulate the inner organs from stagnancy, making it a fabulous addition to your daily meals in the spring. The high chlorophyll content can also begin to protect your skin from the sun from the inside out (this is the same compound that protects plant leaves from burning up in the sun) – another great reason to add in kale in the spring to prep for summer sun!

Lemons

You must have lemons in your lemonade, right? Putting lemons into your water enlivens and awakens its healing capabilities and maximizes its hydrating ability, due to the exceptional mineral salts this citrus contains. These mineral salts hydrate on a cellular level and produce electrolytes to refuel your body. Lemons are also one of the highest sources of Vitamin C and calcium readily available for your body to use. Certain phytonutrients in lemons bind the vitamin C and calcium together, so that they travel as a pair in the body, creating alkalinity and preventing almost every type of cancer. Lemons are also fantastic detoxifiers, purging toxins collected in the body and flushing the liver, kidneys, spleen, thyroid, and gallbladder.

Apples

Apples are a highly alkaline fruit that have the ability to quench both an immediate and cellular-level thirst. Apples are also an amazing detoxifier and contain both malic and tartaric acids that help remove impurities from the liver and gallbladder. They also contain phytochemicals that detox heavy metals and radiation. Apples are especially rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, and have wonderful anti-inflammatory properties. Also containing mineral salts and trace minerals, apples hydrate on a cellular level that replenishes and nourishes the body after exercise or stress.

FRESH AND NOURISHING GREEN LEMONADE

This is the most potent and nourishing green lemonade out there! As you sip, delight in the fact that the kale is going to work to aid digestion and liver health! The Vitamin C it contains hydrates your body, relieves stiff joints, and increases your metabolism. Kale helps more oxygen get to your blood, improving all bodily systems. Moreover, you are gaining energy from phytochemicals and becoming more grounded with this combination of Mother Nature’s treats. Now that is something we can all raise a glass to!

Ingredients:

  • 1 large bunch kale
  • 2-3 lemons
  • 3-4 apples (I use green)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the ingredients for your juicer: coring & chopping apples, peeling lemons, and chopping kale into appropriate sizes.
  2. Put all ingredients through a juicer. I like the Breville Juice Fountain Plus JE98XL, the Omega Masticating Dual-Stage Juicer, and the Hurom HZ Slow Juicer (my personal favorite and the one we use in our family).
  3. Pour over ice cubes and enjoy!

*Note: You can dilute with water if the taste is too tart for you.

Cheers to spring!

Blessings,
Amber Bodily
