Why do some people get very sick from a bacteria, virus, or pathogen, and others don’t?
Why can there be a room full of people exposed to a germ and not all of them will catch it?
Why is it that some households will suffer from the flu but not all who live there fall ill?
It’s all about what’s going on in your insides – your “inner terrain.”
Here’s why and how you can improve your inner terrain to strengthen your body to endure whatever it may encounter in your lifetime!
Germ Theory vs. Terrain theory
“Germ theory” has dominated since the 1800s when the French chemist Louis Pasteur posited that microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, pathogens, etc) are the cause of most diseases. Germ theory gave birth to antibiotics and several other medical interventions for harmful microorganisms in the body.
Pasteur’s friend Claude Bernard, a physiologist, argued that instead of the microorganism, it is actually the body’s inner environment that gives way to dis-ease. He taught that each body’s ability to handle microorganisms differs based on what is happening in each person’s inner “terrain.” What is the environment like inside the body? Will it allow a harmful microorganism to grow or not? These questions point to the one everyone wants to know (especially these days):
Why are people affected in different ways by the same microorganism?
What kind of microorganisms are already existing in the inner terrain? Are they helpful or harmful? Is the inner terrain an environment where harmful microorganisms can grow and multiply? How is the immune system responding? Are the body’s stores of minerals able to support all the systems as they need nourishment? Is there lots of inflammation blocking the way as the body tries to protect itself against an invading microorganism? What, exactly, can be done about your inner terrain?
How To Improve Your Terrain
Your body will encounter many microorganisms in your lifetime. Instead of fearing any one microorganism, why not do your best to build your terrain to handle any of them? Here’s what can help:
TAKE CARE OF YOUR GUT.
Dr. John Harvey Kellogg said, “90% of the diseases of civilization are due to improper functioning of the colon.” In this area of his work, Dr. Kellogg was ahead of his time. Scientists have now found that the digestive system is integral to many parts of our health, including our immune system. A gut out of balance can cause many issues in the body, especially if it is not equipped to handle any harmful microorganisms coming in.
What you eat directly affects your gut. A plant-based diet has been shown to improve gut health – especially if you go gluten-free. Bringing in more fruits and vegetables is a great way to rebalance the gut. For more suggestions, check out this article.
USE FULVIC MINERALS.
What are fulvic minerals? When organic matter decomposes (like compost), the tiniest particles that are leftover contain an incredible support for health. These are fulvic minerals, and fulvic acid is a component of humic substances from the decay of plants in soil. They are rich and full of nutrients, antioxidants, and many other components that have been found to be beneficial for health. Fulvic acid (from fulvic minerals) has been shown to benefit gut health, improve eczema, protect against dementia, prevent chronic inflammatory diseases, prevent viral infections, support the immune system, and many, many more. Fulvic acid has been found to be helpful internally (putting some in water to drink) and externally (skin contact). This is the one that I like.
GET ALKALINE WITH HYDRATION.
When the body is acidic, it is the perfect terrain to let harmful microorganisms grow. Besides eating more fruits & vegetables (almost all of which help bring the body back towards an alkaline state), drinking more good clean water and hydrating fluids can assist in bringing the body back into balance. Most people don’t realize they are dehydrated and the effects of being so. Fluids that are extremely hydrating and which help bring the body back from an acidic state are:
- Coconut water
- Fresh-pressed juices (make sure to look at the quality of the company. One of the only store bought brands I trust is Lakewood
- Organics. I encourage you to make your own if possible!)
- Celery juice
- Lemon water
- Lemon-honey-ginger water
- Parsley water
- Aloe juice
- And many more!
Staying hydrated keeps your terrain well flushed, which doesn’t allow for mucus buildup. Mucus blockages in the body can create an environment where viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens can flourish. So cheers to better hydration and better terrain for beneficial microorganisms, not harmful ones!
GET GOOD SLEEP.
How does good sleep create healthier inner terrain? Well, let’s look at what happens when you don’t get good sleep: greater likelihood of depression, anxiety, impulsive behavior, and poorer cognitive performance; higher risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity; faster-aging and less protective skin; and especially a suppressed immune system. The inner terrain suffers from lack of sleep. So how to get a good night’s slumber? Check out these tips. And remember, consistency is key! Your body will thank you for regularly getting good sleep.
MOVE YOUR BODY.
Getting even gentle regular exercise can be so beneficial for your body. Exercise aids with detoxification, so it helps get out any troublesome microorganisms while keeping the helpful ones healthy. Movement helps your circulation, supports the distribution of oxygen around the body, improves muscle strength and elasticity, and ultimately shows better heart health and greater longevity. Moving your body can be simple and easy on your wallet – even just going for a walk around the block can be a great start!
THESE SUPPLEMENTS CAN HELP.
Before adding any new supplements to your daily regimen, I recommend working with a health practitioner you trust.
If you aren’t on these 5 supplements, I would highly recommend starting them. Remember, you can’t out-supplement a poor diet. Supplements like these will work best when in tandem with a healthy diet. If I had to pick a few to help with improving your inner terrain, it would be these:
- Zinc sulfate (read more here)
- Probiotic (here’s the brand I recommend. This will assist your gut health and healthy microorganisms)
- Oxygen drops (Many people have come to me in the last year-plus with issues that have in part to do with poor oxygen intake and absorption. Oxygen drops can help your body absorb oxygen, which is absolutely needed in your inner terrain.)
Fire Up Your Defenses. Improve Your Inner Terrain.
Instead of worrying about any virus, bacteria, or pathogen – or any variants of them – we should be asking, how can I help my body handle whatever will come my way?
Why not improve our whole body’s defenses for as many microorganisms as we can, instead of using a single method for one microorganism?
Now, are there things you can do within your outer environment to reduce bacteria, viruses, and other foreign pathogens? Yes, absolutely. But those cannot be the only defenses our bodies have.
Your body was built to last. Your body is strong. Your body can handle this time of global crisis. All you have to do is give it what it needs, and take away what it doesn’t.
All my blessings to you for a strong and powerful inner terrain!
